Following a desire to work
in marble, he took to the trade of stone masonry, After 20 years of designing
and crafting marble and granite, he relocated from london to peaceful Devon to
devote his time to his first love of sculpting wild life. His style combines his
knowledge of the material with his classical art education to produce a unique
form of highly finished sculpture.
Hedley has always been a spiritual man and this influences his work greatly. He
explains that his ability comes from within him, he merely releases his inner
spirit. He relates his talent as an ability to tap into this inner energy, "It
does it for me," he modestly says. "Marble itself can be over 600 million
years old and can present a unique challenge. You soon find a sense of meditation
arrives when carving and pretty soon minutes turn into hours. Before I pick up
any tools I spend a long time looking at it. Each piece of stone has its own character,
its own weaknesses and strengths. I must be able to see the image within the stone
before I start." |
